10 Self Coaching Questions to Increase Resilience

Many people ask me how I have coped and continue to cope throughout all the challenges life throws at me. And every time I answer the same way...

With each situation I am faced with a choice to either be a victim and feel self pity or to create thought patterns which empower me and give me an optimistic perspective. I am a firm believer that my thoughts create my reality and therefore my greatest tool to navigate myself through challenge is to ensure I am asking myself the right questions which will make me more positive and resilient.

Questions activate thought patterns so if the quality of your questions is poor then you will be actively creating negativity and an inner pity party. But if your questions are enlightening and force you to face a situation head on and grow from it, then you manage that situation with strength, courage, logic and ease.

So here are my top 10 questions to help me be more resilient and move through a challenging situation or shift my thoughts at the times when those automatic negative thoughts (ants) pop up:

How can I adapt myself to this situation?

What is a positive learning I can gain from this situation?
How can I find the humor in this situation?
How can I accept this situation?
What thoughts/beliefs do I need to let go of in order to accept this situation?
How can I see this situation from the other persons perspective?
What expectations can I let go of?
What fear can I let go of?
How can I back myself here?
What support do I need ?

Pick a couple of these questions and give them a try. This is best to do initially as a journalling exercise so you can reflect back and evaluate your answers. Notice how your thoughts begin to move from problem-focused and dis-empowering to solutions-focused and notice how with each question you feel more resilient, more empowered and more accepting of a situation.

Acceptance is the key to a resilient mindset and allows you to go with the flow of a situation rather then push back or get stuck in resistance.

Have fun with these! I look forward to hearing how you go!
