How many times do you get a feeling to do something, get
excited, feel energized, start to take action…but then, at that point the mind
begins to step in and talk you out of your decision, leaving you stuck,
confused and back into a space of limbo? How do we know which thoughts are
right? The ones we first get or the ones that the mind is bringing into our
awareness for caution? How do we know what is our intuition and what is our
logic and how can we balance the two to help us make decisions and thrive
forwards with healthy action steps?
Let’s think of a scenario…
Think of a time you had an inspired thought…An inspired
thought is a thought you receive which gives you a warm sense of excitement and
enthusiasm through your body. You begin to visualize the possibilities and feel
happy, positive and energized. You know this is everything you want to do and
you day dream the joy this vision will bring into your life. Your heart feels
full and you know this is something which lights up your soul.
I was recently with a client and she began to say how much
she would love to teach people what she knows and empower others with her
wisdom. (Thank you for being my muse for
this post) As she spoke about it, I could feel her enthusiasm and passion.
I knew this was her purpose and something she had to follow through on to stay
true to her essence. She mapped out the vision and could see the moment of
truth clearly.
So then we began to discuss the steps on how to make it
happen and this is when the clarity of her vision began to become a clouded
confusion. The mind began to creep in.
“I wonder what my
husband would think.” She said
…And what would my
children think, and my work colleagues…and my friends? How would I balance it
all? What if no one likes what I have to say? What if I get laughed at,
humiliated and judged? What if a fail? And what if I succeed, how would that
change my life? This all seems too hard now, perhaps I need to just stay in
what I am doing… (Pop went the bubble of excitement)
The doubt and caution of her logical mind began to creep in
to her beautiful bubble of clarity and began to intoxicate her vision with fear.
Because she was now in a state of fear, her nervous system was triggered into a
flight/fight/freeze mode, causing her to feel anxiety and worry which disabled
the vision in her creative mind and led to a very busy chattering mind,
bringing up every reason why she should not follow through on what she felt
drawn to do. The result… indecision, immobility and procrastination…and worst
of all DIS-EMPOWERMENT!
What if we saw this process above as the dance between
intuition and logic?
Intuition is the warm, fuzzy feelings of certainty you get
when you feel passionate, enthused and happy about something. I like to think
of intuition as the wisdom in your heart! The inner knowing that something is
right for you and meant for you. The inner knowing of what truly makes you
happy and what you need. It is the inner voice of clarity, belief, trust and
faith!
Intuition is full of abundance, fun, inspiration and
ultimate success because you are listening to what your heart (soul) wants.
Intuition is your inner compass and GPS system, guiding you towards your truth.
Intuition is confidence, wisdom and courage. Intuition is insight and a
definite feeling you get in the body which you normally refer to as a gut
feeling!
What is logic? Logic is the points of caution the mind
begins to present you with. Logic is every bit of information which the
subconscious mind has absorbed throughout your life and stores in your pool of
knowledge called your intellect. (Thus subconscious mind takes in 2 million
bits of information per second and we filter into our conscious awareness what
is relevant) Logic is the risk analyst, measuring what risks your behavior will
have and what you SHOULD, COULD OR WOULD do.
On a very simplistic level, logic is your fear. And fear, as
mentioned above, causes a shut down in your creativity and creates an illusion
of possible WHAT IFS!
That is why I always refer to fear as False
Evidence Appearing Real. However,
there is a difference between fear and caution and you do not need your fear to
destabilize your actions!
If you begin to use your fear in a positive way by looking
at the points of
caution and then using those points to empower you to be
better or see things you would need to focus on, then your fear starts to work
for you. You can then take your positive and inspired thought and map it out
clearly in an empowered way using both your intuition and your logic.
So if I come back to the client I was referencing above,
using this process helped her think about all the things she needed to do which
included discussing her passions with her husband and loved ones and thinking
about ways she could educate herself to make informed decisions. She could keep
that enthusiasm and passion bubbling in her body while at the same time working
all the bits of caution which kept on coming up. This led to strategic, planned
action which she felt inspired to work on every day. Her life began to feel
more meaningful, purposeful, fulfilled and exciting! She is now working towards
her wildly important goal and I know
she will achieve unbelievable success for her and her loved ones!
So here is an exercise to help you achieve a perfect balance
between logic and intuition (head and heart)
1.
Create some space for yourself to visualize
something you are truly passionate about. Something that is special to you and
would mean a lot to you to experience and achieve. Spend at least 2-5 minutes
(or more if you can) day dreaming or visualizing this picture taking in all the
details.
2.
Notice how that vision makes you feel. Really
connect with the feelings! Do you feel inspired and warm inside? Do you feel
happy, excited, enthused and passionate? Note what those feelings are and
notice where in your body you feel those feelings. Sit with those feelings for
at least 2-5 minutes (or more if you can).
3. Write out your vision exactly how you see it
and exactly as you want it to be. Write it out in the present moment, “I am standing on
stage teaching others about my model, for example.”
4.
Notice once you are done if the mind begins to
bring in points why you should not follow through. This may happen right away
or over a series of time. If you are lucky and 100% confident then it doesn't need to happen at all! Whoo hoo! But if you are beginning to think of points of
caution then begin to write them out exactly how they are coming up- write out
all the what ifs…
5.
As you begin to go through the what ifs, think
of ways you can overcome them or what you need to do to eliminate or avoid them,
as in the examples of education or
communication I mentioned above. Write
out all these possible solutions and list them as steps you now can take to
create your goal, your vision and your passionate dream in a systematized way!
You can further break these down into easy bite size chunks or baby steps you
need to take and if you follow one baby step a day you will eventually get
there in your own time with caution, with passion, with confidence and
certainty! Most of all you will follow through on your inspired action which always
links you back to fulfilling your life’s purpose.
The result…
ONE HAPPY HEART AND ONE PEACEFUL MIND!
Enjoy!
